Neighbours

Meet Craig & Kristine. They are our neighbours. We consider ourselves extremely lucky to share a cul-de-sac with them. Our kids get along well, we enjoy spending time with each other, and we even go to the same church. Lucky indeed. Who wouldn't want to live in a neighbourhood where you know the people who live next door, and across the street from you? One where if something were to happen you knew you were only a phone call away from a help. That exact thing happened just last week. My van broke down at the school after picking the girls up. It worked fine on the way there, but when I went to start it up after they jumped in, the engine just wouldn't turn over, all it did was make a clicking sound. I knew Kristine would probably be just getting home from picking up her own kids, and may be available to come by and grab us. Sure enough she was, and she did. What a relief. It was a huge help to get a ride, especially since we had the dog with us, but no leash, added to the fact that it was snowing, and chilly. Plus the kids had 45 minutes to get to the Dance Studio. She was a real life saver that afternoon. We are so grateful to have each other as neighbours. I love that I can peek out my window and see her house, and I know she feels the exact same way.

I got to play a little more withe the new Echo Park This & That Graceful line,and knew this photo wold be a great fit with the colours.

To adhere the twine I used a few glue dots under the loops and a tiny bit of Glossy Accents along the length of it. To get the phrase strips to pop up off the page a bit I used tiny bits of Sookwang double sided tape at various spots along the length of the strip. The flowers are all layered, two using pop dots for dimension, and one is glued right to the paper. Each have a brad through the center.

I think it would be so great to get to know the rest of my neighbours enough over the next few years, that I would eventually have photos of each of them too.

The Olivetti

Thanks to my sweet, and loving mother-in-law, and the help of The Trading Post I now have my very own Olivetti. Just look at how cute it is. In great shape, works like a charm and a full ribbon cartridge. I was so excited when mom opened her trunk to reveal this 30 year old treasure. Typewriters have been all the rage in the scrapbooking world over the past couple of years. I mentioned in a previous post how I almost always buck the trend, no matter what it is, not sure why, I just do. If you are familiar with my scrapping, you've seen that I hand-write quite frequently on my scrapbook pages. To me the picture, and the pretty paper isn't what it's all about. To me, the whole reason that I take the time to arrange my photos in this way is to preserve the memories, record the stories, and leave a legacy for those who come after me. I believe the journaling is a key element to scrapping. Sometimes the photo and title really do say it all, but more times than not, there's a story to be told. Handwriting takes a lot of space, even for those of us who write tiny and neatly. That's where typewriters come in. They help to fit a lot of writing into a very small space. The layout I shared yesterday had a lot of writing on the tags. I never could have hand written all of that on my own. There is the option of running my pages and/or tags through my printer. It works, but is not time efficient, and uses twice the amount of ink as the typewriter, as you must print everything twice. Once to give you a guide for your tag, and then once again with your tag fixed over the original spot to get the printing exactly where it needs to be on the tag. I am so happy to have this little guy around. It fits perfectly on my shelf next to my sewing machine. I am so thankful to mom for doing the legwork (or I guess in this case phone work, as she received several calls offering up a typewriter for sale), and scoring me this little beauty. Oh, and the best part ... it was FREE. That's right. It turns out the woman who called ended up being someone mom knew from back in the day. When this lady found out who mom was wanting it for, and what I was using it for, she offered to simply give it to me. Let's just say she made my day. I'm hoping that the gift set of handmade thank you cards she'll be receiving from me will make her day right back.

Grateful

Scrapping Everyday Miracles Challenge #13 is live today. This month Roulien challenged us all to come up with one word that describes who we are. I found this a little difficult. I've always found it difficult to describe myself in one word. I guess it's because I feel like choosing just one word would put me in a box. There are a number of words that would be appropriate today, that may not be appropriate next week, or next month perhaps. There are times when I believe that the best way to describe myself would be to say that I am a contradiction. Some days I am as predictable as snow in winter. Other days I can take even myself by surprise with the choices I make. What I chose to do rather, was consider all the ways my Lord would describe me. As it turns out one of the devotions from Proverbs 31 Ministries last week focused on just that very thing. The article spoke about the trouble we can have, especially as women, recognizing our worth outside of the role we fill for our spouse, our children, our bosses, etc. The writer went on to remind us of all the ways God sees us, the way He created us. I chose to use this as the basis of my layout.

Using My Mind's Eye Follow Your Heart collection. I sprayed the Pink Paislee mistable trim with pink Mr. Huey's and used a Gluber to make the large flower.

There are other words those close to me would use to describe me, and perhaps one day I'll do a layout focused on them. This week, however it was humbling yet empowering to focus on the way my Creator sees me. His Word is full of beautiful descriptions of how He sees all His children. Scripture says that YOU are:
- created in the image of God (Genesis 1:27)
- fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14)
- precious and honored in His sight (Isaiah 43:4)
- redeemed and forgiven (Ephesians 1:7)
- a new creature in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17)
- holy and blameless before God (Ephesians 1:4, 1 Corinthians 1:30)
- chosen by God (1 Peter 2:9)
- God's masterpiece (Ephesians 2:10)
- created with purpose to do good works for His Kingdom (Ephesians 2:10)
- and on, and on, and on...

For me, these promises serve as a wonderful reminder of not only who I am, but whose I am. How about you? How would you define yourself today if asked?

He adores her

Happy Friday,

It feels like it's been a long week around here. So happy that the weekend is finally here. Tomorrow I have a breakfast date with one of the cutest 6 year olds I know. Little Miss Nyah and I will be having a little girl time over chocolate chip pancakes somewhere. I can't wait.

I'll leave you with a layout I did about Isabelle and my father in law. This was taken in Disney while we were waiting for the train at Animal Kingdom. I just love the look on both their faces. You just see the love. These two have a very special relationship. I think it has to do with the fact that for so long she was the only grandchild that lived here. (My sister-in-law and her family lived away from Manitoba for several years). My father-in-law, and mother in law would spoil this girl so much. One instance that still manages to come up in conversation is when my father-in-law took Belle with him for coffee, once in the morning to Tim Horton's, and then again in the afternoon to Robin's. Yup, spoiled.

Journaling reads: adore: verb: to regard with utmost esteem, love, and respect; honor, to like or admire very much.

I love that they love each other so much, it's something I never got to experience as a child. My girls,may not know it yet, but someday they'll realize how very lucky they are to have grandparents who are so present in their lives.

I've heard it said that being a grand parent is even more fun than being a parent. I can only hope that I live to discover if it really is so.

So Alike

Have I mentioned how in love with the new My Mind's Eye Collection I am? The papers are so versatile, and fun, with soft muted colours, yum. I used yet another one to create a layout celebrating the similarities between Darwin and his father. Years ago people would say how alike they looked, I didn't really see it then, to be honest. Lately, however I've been seeing it more and more. Not just in the physical traits either, but in the way they laugh, and what they joke about. The way they both sit in their respective recliners to watch television, and other little, everyday ways. This shot was taken at the airport while waiting for our plane to Orlando. I had the camera pointed in their direction, from behind, and asked them to turn around so I could get a photo of them, and voila, there it was again: that same look on both of their faces.

MME Follow Your Heart papers, and embellies

Looking at this photo still makes me laugh. I'm glad that these two have a good relationship. It doesn't happen often, but D will even call his dad on occasion just to chit chat. No, I'm not kidding. I love that he does that. Their relationship gives my girls a standard to strive for when choosing their respective mates. I am blessed to have two gentle, humble, loving, caring, funny, sweet guys in my life. Here's hoping you have a few good men in your life too.

Scraplift Chain Challenge Reveal

We just completed a month long Scraplift Chain Challenge over at My Scrapbook Nook. This time there were 5 teams with six players each. It was another fun round, with some gorgeous creations created along the way. I was lucky enough to have my layout chosen as the original layout to start off the round for each team. Here's just a little taste of how my team evolved.

Remember, the way this works is that the scrapper only sees the layout that they're sent through private message. Although I knew that one of my layouts had been chosen as the original layout, I had no idea which one it was. All I had to go on was Miranda's layout. Here's the layout I created using hers as my guide.

Using Echo Park This & That Line

You'll see that I kept a lot of the same elements that she had, but switched them around just a little to suit my personal taste. This layout celebrates the relationship I have with my mother-in-law. It documents our meeting through her son, (my now husband), through our engagement, and wedding, to her relationship with my three girls. I really like that the simple design keeps the focus on the photo and the story behind the layout.

Top 9 favorites revealed

My Top 9 in no particular order at this point in time are: sunshine, chocolate,football, dancing, family, sushi, coffee, movies w/D, and singing. It's a short concise list, but something I think my girls will appreciate in years to come, getting a glimpse of what makes me tick.

The idea for this layout came from Nicole over at The Nook. She issued a challenge to create a layout inspired by quilts. You can see her post here. Now, I must confess, I don't quilt ~~shocker, I know~~, but the first thing that came to my mind was hexagons created out of random pieces of paper. After completing the layout, it occurred to me that maybe I got quilts mixed up with afghans. I went on a hunt in Google to see if I was off my rocker, and discovered these images.

So it looks like maybe I was on the right track after all. This layout took me outside of my box, and I enjoyed it. That's one of the great things about the Nook kit club. Some months the product is right up my ally, and the kit practically scraps itself, other months, as mch as I may love all the pretty paper, and cute little embellishments I just can't seem to put a layout together. That's where the forum and the fabulous DT over at the Nook come in. Every month there are classes, and/or challenges to spark the creativity, and get the mojo flowing. Then it's all up to you. A Disney layout

We have so many Disney photos, that it was a little overwhelming knowing where to start when it came to scrapping them. I'm still thinking that a mini-album would be the best way to showcase the trip and record all the memories, and have the kids take park in the journaling. For now, I've managed to at least get some highlights down on a two-pager. It highlights all the places we saw, and all of us who got see them.

It was a dream come true, something I've wanted to do since I was a child. Getting to experience Disney World with Mom & Dad included was more than I could have dreamed, honestly. The Winter of 2012 the dream became a reality, as we pulled the kids from school and flew down to Orlando for 6 days of fun. First stop (1) Magic Kingdom (Isabelle wanted roller coasters not Mickey Mouse). There's no other way to begin a Disney adventure really. The most fun was had at (2) Universal Studios, and (3) Islands of Adventure, where we met Shrek & the gang (4), and saw the dinosaurs of Jurassic Park. We all agree that Universal & Islands were the best for fun factor with the (5) Rip Rocket roller coaster being a fave. We hit Animal Kingdom (6&7) on the last and warmest of days. Expedition Everest was a blast, along with the Safari where we saw gorillas and hippos. I love the photo of Mom and Dad in front of the iconic tree. (8)Epcot was another fave, as there was something for everyone, and the character greetings (9) and the fireworks were so cool. So much fun. From Magic Kingdom (10) Buzz Lightyear to Everst and everything in between. Memories for a lifetime were made @ Disney.

If you have been thinking about getting away with the family, but are hesitant on it for whatever reason, I encourage you to revisit the idea. It was so worth it. Worth the hour and a half drive to the airport, worth the financial pinch, worth the infinite amount of U turns we took on our way to and from the park everyday, and definitely worth the tired feet at the end of the day. It gave us time to unplug from the routine and pressures of everyday life here at home. It allowed my kids to enjoy their father as the fun-loving, joking, playmate they only see from time to time. It allowed us to enjoy some time alone with Mom, and Dad in a way that's different and more relaxed than when one of us is 'hosting' the other. We love our life here at home. The girls really enjoy Dance, and love spending time with their friends at the studio several days a week. They like school, have wonderful teachers, and are learning, and developing so nicely this year. We have a fun, and loving Small Group (5 families) with whom we meet every other week to talk about God, life, church, and the everyday things of life. All that is great, but we are increasingly aware that if we don't make time to just hang together we will lose the connection that makes us friends as well as family, appreciating the fun quirky idiosyncrasies that make us each who we are. Who knows, time away, as a family may be just what you and yours need also.

Nikki Sivils - take one

Yesterday I shared with the you the February Sketch/Technique Challenge over at Scrapping Everyday Miracles. Today I'll show you the original layout I did with the same photo and product.

When I first opened the My Lil' Monster line, the first photo that came to mind to use for my layout was one I had taken just a few days prior. It's a photo of my two youngest girls with their cousin Jayden. My brother and his wife make some pretty cute babies, I think you'd agree. This kid is so delightful. He enters the room, and it's like the lights have been turned up to their brightest capacity. He's sweet, funny, handsome, loving, and going to be a great catch for some lucky young lady in about 30 or 40 years *giggle*. I adore him to pieces - we all do. Here's the original creation with the Nikki Sivils product.

It was only after I had completed the journaling that I remembered the layout was intended for use with the sketch challenge. The primary requirement for a sketch challenge, is to use the actual sketch, go figure. This looked nothing like the sketch. There was no way I could use this layout on the Scrapping Everyday Miracles Blog. No biggie, I figured since I had so much product (thanks to the generous Ms. Sivils), I would simply create a second layout for the site. I love this design. Some of the elements are popped off the page. How cute are those little banners? I'm hoping to lift it for use with another line I have in mind. A big thank you to Nikki for generously sponsoring SEM this month and pulling me a little outside my box with these bold beautiful colours.

Sketch Challenge

Creative Scrappers Sketch #196

I am thrilled to be this week's featured designer over at Creative Scrappers. I was thrilled to receive the request from Kristine back in January. That was a huge secret to have to hold on to. Although I didn't make the team this time around, I am so happy to be able to join them, even if it's just for a week. Sketch #196 goes live today. It is another fabulous creation by fellow 'Pegger Nicole Nowosad. For this one I was able to brake out the paints I purchased just before Christmas, for the first time. I am so glad I did, as I'm not sure how I would have created the look otherwise. Here's the sketch.

On the Bright Side

Another layout with the wonderful new My Mind's Eye to share with you. This is my mother and father in law in front of the statuesque landmark of a tree in the center of Animal Kingdom at Walt Disney world. I couldn't tell you the last photo we have with the two of them together. Even this one had to be begged and pleaded for. It was such a wonderful opportunity we had to discover the wonder of Disney World with them there with us. They aren't much for any of the rides, but that did work out well for the rest of us roller coaster junkies, as there was always someone available to hold the bags. I thought they were nuts to want to travel all that way, and spend all that money on park admissions only to sit there. What I came to realize, however, was that they weren't just sitting there. To them, this was an opportunity to spend some quality time with their grandkids (and kids). To see them discover the wonder of Disney, and to take in the sights and sounds of Florida, a much different landscape than their usual day to day view. It was just as much a holiday for them as it was for us. For them, there were just a few less terrifying, breath taking moments, having skipped each and every roller coaster. We all hope we get to experience something similar together soon. Perhaps even my sister-in-law and her family will join us the next time around.

♫ Sweet Caroline ♪ ♪

One of the best parts about working at a scrapbook store is getting to work with brand new product as soon as it arrives in the store. The brand spanking new My Mind's Eye arrived the other day, and boy is it ever gorgeous. So far I've had a chance to work with two of the lines in the Miss Caroline Collection (which I call Sweet Caroline because I get that old Neil Diamond song in my head whenever I see the name)

Here's a layout I created using Howdy Doody.

You may recognize the photos as I've scrapped them before. Here's a prime example of my impatience. I knew what design I wanted my page to be and need three small photos to use. These were the first ones I found. They matched, I love the story they tell, and I love the two women in the photos very much. Done, that's what I used, despite having used them before. Have you ever done the same?

My scrap room has looked like a bomb went off the past couple of days as I've been working on a mini album (a gift for my grandmother). It was nothing special really, just some dollar store albums with pictures, and a few embellies here and there. It had to travel to Barbados, which is pricy on it's own. Keeping the project light helped to keep cost down. In the end it still ended up costing $37 to ship it, but I know that's a small price to pay for the smile it is going to put on her face. She'll be celebrating her 90th birthday at the end of the month. I wish my mother was still alive to celebrate with her, that would have been so wonderful. I've also got imitation dog hair everywhere, as I've been working on a costume for Eden (she's playing a dog in an upcoming school play). As I only use my sewing machine on paper, the site is quite comical. I think the costume will turn out okay though, at least I sure hope so. The Alice in Wonderland costume that Théa needs, however is a whole other matter entirely. I need professional help on that one.

It finally my turn to lift the layout above me over at The Nook Scraplift Challenge, I'll be sure to let you know when the reveal occurs, I can't wait to get started on it. I'd like to do a private one here on my blog. I know a few of you said you would be interested if I ever did decide to host one. Sketch #189

Thank you all for your well wishes to me regarding the Creative Scrappers design team. I did not make the cut, however, again. It's getting embarrassing already, as this is the 3rd, or maybe even 4th time I've applied for them. There's obviously something that is holding me back from being included. The official list has not yet been released, so I don't yet know if any of my scrappy friends have made it, but I am really hoping some of us have some good news to share with us this week.

Here is one of layouts I submitted for the call, based on sketch #189. I loved this sketch, it was very much my style.

Using Studio Calico's January Kit, and some bits from my stash

I have several layouts on the back burner waiting to share with you later this week, as well as a couple of scrappy secrets dying to come out, so it's all good, the rejection hasn't killed me. In fact this time I am really at peace with it, and know that so much about being chosen has to do with so much that is out of my control.

Western Romance

I had a lot of fun working with this line by Webster's Pages the other day. I had these photos of Théa from this summer, and when I saw this paper I knew they would be a perfect match. It had been so long since I scrapped however, that this page took me a ridiculously long time to finish, and it's not even 'all that'. Does that happen to you too? It's funny, but when I'm away from it for a week or so I take forever to find my groove again.

I only picked up a few sheets of this paper, but after finishing this layout I still had enough left to complete another layout, so I completed this one of my mother in law.

I submitted this one for Challenge number 9 over at My Scrapbook Nook, to use at least 10 words as a title.

For Christmas, my sister-in-law and her family thought it would be funny to prank my mother-in-law. They gave her a mouse in a jar, wrapped in a pretty Christmas bag. This woman hates mice with a passion, but you'd never know it by looking at this photo. Rather than screaming her head off, she simply laughed about it. She couldn't stop laughing actually, which of course we know is really a sign of nervousness. She was such a good sport about it though. I bet she was quite the prankster as a young person. This is probably my favorite photo of her, candid, genuine, and a glimpse into her fun and carefree side.

The official DT list for Creative Scrappers will be revealed today. I haven't heard from Kristine, so I doubt I'll be seeing my name on that list. I feel completely at peace about it though. That's a nice change from the nerves, and anxiety I usually feel. I really hope, that even if I don't, one of my friends makes the team. I know so many talented scrappers, that it always makes me happy to see them do well.

I'm off to a crop tonight. Should be interesting, as I haven't got any photos ready to go, nor do I know what I'll be scrapping. The Liebster Award

I met a very talented card maker recently. To say she's talented may actually be an understatement. Her name is Jody. She lives here in the Winnipeg, and came into the Scrapbook Cottage where I work a few weeks ago to pick up supplies for an upcoming class she'll be teaching. I checked out her blog after meeting her, and was amazed at her gorgeous card creations. Wouldn't you know it just a little while later I see her layout on the My Mind's Eye blog as an honorable mention for their latest challenge. She's got talent coming out the wazoo. This same Jody is not only talented but also very sweet, as she has nominated my lil' ol' blog for the Liebster award.

Liebster, is German for 'dearest' or 'beloved' but it can also mean 'favorite'

Scrapping Everyday Miracles Challenge #13

Nicole is up today with Challenge #13: to scrap something we're passionate about. The obvious thing for a mother to scrap would be her family. That was just a little too obvious for me. After giving it some thought I decided to scrap about my desire to keep learning. I'm passionate about growth, and not becoming stagnant in all the various areas of my life (spiritually, relationally with my hubby, and friends, in ministry, in my scrapping...everywhere) I once read a great quote that said something along the lines of "when I leave this earth, I hope to have not one ounce of talent left. I hope to have used it all up." I love that quote, the idea of living life to the fullest, serving others, and embracing every opportunity is so poetic, isn't it. The reality for me, however, for most of us in fact, is that life happens, and although we feel deeply about something, it's that very something that keeps getting shoved to the 'back burner' to accommodate the rest of life's duties. I was nearly three years ago that I decided to break myself out of my comfort zone, and put my money where my mouth is. I had talked to my kids about taking risks, and welcoming new opportunities in their lives, yet my life looked pretty much the same day after day. I felt I was becoming stagnant. It was then that I shook things up a little and welcomed some opportunities of my own to grow, and learn. One of those areas was Dance. I noticed that there was an Adult Tap Class offered at the studio where my kids dance. I had watched them a few times after the Zumba class I was taking at the time, and I was intrigued. It looked like a lot of fun. It was a small group of women who looked to be enjoying themselves. Needless to say, I took the plunge, joined the class, spent a few weeks catching up, and enjoyed every minute of it. It wasn't easy at first, it's almost like learning another language, teaching your feet to move in a seemingly unnatural way. But it did click, eventually. Fast forward to this year, where I am now a member of the Kick It Cougars (as they call themselves), an Adult Competitive Tap Class. It's a ton of fun, good exercise, with a fabulous, and fun teacher, and an equally fun assistant, where laughter is guaranteed in every class. Sure, I still struggle, and I'll never, ever be able to do a 'pick-up', never mind a 'syncopated pick up'. But I did what I set out to do. I put myself out there, to grow and learn, and I continue to do so. I chose to scrap a memory of that plunge. This is the Tuesday night Cougar gang, at our end of the year recital practice looking sharp in our bright colours."

Exhale

We're back safe and sound. Sorry, to have left you hanging over the past week. I wasn't able to post on the road. Hubby and I tried several times to get photos posted to the blog using the iPad, and neither of us were able to find success. We did, however have a fabulous trip. Disney World, for us, lived up to all the hype. There were some surprises, like how chilly it got in the evenings, and how early all the parks closed at this time of year. But we have no complaints. The kids had a wonderful time, they saw a lot, walked a lot, got along pretty well, and thoroughly enjoyed sharing the experience with their grandparents. All in all we hit the following parks, and favored the following rides. Magic Kingdom: Space Mountain, Universal Studios: Rip Rocket Roller coaster, Islands of Adventure: Dragon Challenge, Hollywood Studios: Rockin' Roller Coaster, Epcot: Mission Space, Animal Kingdom: Expedition Everest. Did I mention that all but one of us are roller coaster junkies? All that is, but Théa. I have the best photo of her to share with you at a later date. It's the one and only photo we did buy from any of the parks. I am so glad we decided to do this trip, and that we waited until now. Our kids are the perfect age, and going at this time of year meant that we had virtually no line ups to deal with. Seven days just wasn't enough. Even with all the planning I did we still managed to run out of hours at the end of every single day. I'm really hoping there will be a 'next time', there's still so much I'd like to see, and a couple of roller coasters I didn't get to.

So, now we're back to life without the heat, the rides, or the fever of Disney. Instead we're now focused on life with Dance Competition practices, a Grade 3/4 Alice in Wonderland performance, and the start of a brand new semester. I have some scrapping to catch up on and am looking forward to the official start of my term on the Scrapping Everyday Miracles design team. Challenge #13 is set to go live in a few hours. Our first ever visit to Disney. None of us have been, and we are so very much looking forward to experiencing the so called magic they speak of. We've got our list of don't miss rides, all our confirmation numbers, directions, and list of all sorts so we're ready for all that Orlando has to offer us.

Project Life wk 3

I'm thinking that I may have to stop sharing my Project Life with you, as it's turning out to be rather boring. These baseball card pages are super fast, and convenient, hence my using them again this week. I really think the issue is in my printer. I've tried a few different things and not been able to print the appropriate size for the slot. I'm having to cut everything down, or mount it on a second piece of card stock to get it to fit the pocket properly. That's driving me crazy. I'm not going to throw in the towel, but for now I'll just keep plugging away at it.

I had to sew an additional 4x6 pocket for the photos I wanted to highlight. I just took a 12x12 protector, cut it to size, and sewed it shut. I then sewed it to the center of the first page protector. That way you can still flip it up to see the photos underneath. This is what I mean.

But this is real life, is it not? Not everything can go entirely as planned. And so we put one foot in front of the other and do the best we know how.

Project Life Week 2

Happy Monday friends,

What a full weekend we had here. Friends, sushi, football, shared meals, ice skating, working, church. Feeling loved, and oh so very blessed. I'm still not great at remembering to take photos during all. Really hoping to get better at it as the year goes on. I've been using an App for my iPhone called Momento, that's been really handy for documenting moments in our days and weeks. It's pretty great actually it automatically draws any info you've shared on Twitter or Facebook, or Instagram right into it's calendar. It also allows you to keep notes that are important to you for that day, and upload photos that go with the day also. So, if I forget to take a photo to serve as a memory I simply 'create an event' in Momento to remind me of it, when putting together my Project Life for that week.

For this week I decided to use two different style page protectors. I had several photos, only a little time,and there really wasn't much out of the ordinary that had happened during the week, so quick and easy was what the album called for this week.

You'll notice that not all the pictures flow in the same direction. Normally that would drive me crazy. I've decided not to sweat the small stuff with this project and concentrate on why I'm doing it, and stick with that theme as I assemble my album. The point of it all is to recognize, remember, and cherish, the moments in between the big events. The fact that not everything is match-matchy, and that we're going to have to cock our heads from one side to the other from time to time, and the fact that some pages will just be plain boring is NOT the point, and will have zero lasting effect on how we enjoy the album in months, and years to come. As long as I keep reminding myself of these things, I think I'll be able to see this project through to the end.

Lifting myself

... well not literally. The scrappy kind of lifting.

Challenges number three and four are up at My Scrapbook Nook. Three can be found here. I've not done this one yet. Challenge number four is from Hilde, who challenged us to pick one of our favorite layouts from last year and lift it. I chose this one of D.

Although the placement of the journaling bothers me (I think it throws the balance off somewhat), I love this layout overall, so I chose this one. Plus I had this sweet little photo of Wilson that I knew I wanted to use for the challenge. Here's what I came up with.

This time I kept the journaling tiny, and better placed. It's been awhile since I've hand stitched on a project too, so this was a fun one.

That's it for me today. Been getting things ready for our trip next week, spoiled myself with my first manicure in about 16 years yesterday, schellac, loving it so far, (we'll see if it really last 2-4 weeks), volunteered in the girls' school today for pizza lunch (loved that), caught up with a friend with whom I haven't spoken to in months, and the sun is beaming in through my window. Overall feeling really blessed this week.

And there's never, ever a shortage of inspiration to be found by those who submit to the challenges, nor by the wonderful sketches her team comes up with. This will be my third time trying out for this team. I'm really hoping this is the one for me. If not, no worries, I'm gonna keep trying, she won't be able to shake me that easily, mwhahah. I think it's good to keep putting myself out there, it helps me develop a think skin. Something you very much need in this subjective world of creating, and putting emotions to paper. Wish me luck, pretty please.

Project Life: Week 1

Thank you all for your sweet and encouraging comments last week regarding my Project Life or as I'm calling it, my Moments In Between Album. I'm sticking it out, and did manage to complete my Week One on Friday night. I actually don't even mind it too much. I had way more photos than I had space, so I had to decide which ones stayed and which did not, and be somewhat creative in getting everything in. I won't lie, I did find it somewhat frustrating, but realize that that is very much the perfectionist in me acting out. I realize that appreciating the moments in between the events is anything but perfect. It's often the things that cause us grief and frustration that make us eventually stop and realize the blessing in them. Granted that blessing is not always immediate. The stuff of life is rarely perfect, rarely convenient, and often comes with some sort of price, sometimes good, sometimes, not so good. That is the type of attitude with which I really need to begin to appreciate the album and what it will mean to us when it's complete. I have no doubt that we'll all enjoy looking back through it as the weeks progresses. With that, let me reveal to you my very first two pages of my Moments In Between Album.

I've decided to use the We R Memory Keepers page protectors to keep the cost down. They are available at The Scrapbook Cottage where I work, and I can get them anytime, versus ordering something from online. Everything else I used here is from my stash, again, in an attempt to keep the cost down. The patterned paper on the left is from Simple Stories Year-o-graphy line, the rest is all from my stash.

So, one week down 51 to go. Hope I can find my groove. I know some of you are doing this project also, how are you doing with it? I'd love to know.

New Year Crop

I've told you about the 5 week long crop happening over at My Scrapbook Nook. Challenge 1 & 2 were posted last weekend, and closed this weekend. I wanted to share with you the layouts I created for each of those.
Challenges 1 was a recipe challenge. You needed to use the assigned number and specifications of products, and then follow the directions to create your layout. This was an exercise for me that resulted in two layouts rather than just one. I was so excited to get started on the challenge, that as soon as I read the product list I went off to create. I should have scrolled down a little further to see that there were directions I was suppose to have followed. Oops.

If you look closely you'll notice they both have a lot of the same elements. I am glad I managed to get both layouts, even if I did go about it the long way.

Challenge 2 was to use 10 different patterned papers. I know that sounds like a ton, but there are some creative ways to use that many without overloading your page with colour. I had 2 different ideas I thought would work well. When I looked through the thread however, I discovered that 2 others had the same ideas also. Hence this layout of my one of my dear friends and her daughter.

SEM Sketch Challenge

Lisa is up with a Sketch Challenge over at Scrapping Everyday Miracles today. It's a great sketch, so hopefully you'll have a chance to play along. We've also switched things up a bit over there, where now you'll have two chances a month at the RAK up for grabs. One will be with the month long challenge, and the second will be with the mid-month sketch/technique challenge. You could double your chances of winning just like that. Here's the layout I created for the challenge.

Want to know something funny? I had four photos for this layout, but couldn't make them work with the sketch. I decided the best solution would be for me to put them in a hidden pocket so that they could stay with the others and still be seen. That tab at the top is actually a long hidden pocket. i added an extra piece of patterned paper and glued the photos onto it. After I got all the paper down I decided they needed some stitching around the edges for definition. Because the piece with the photos on it is angled, but the piece of paper in the hidded pocket isn't I ended up accidentally stitching right through the hidden pictures, actually adhering them to the layout completely. There was no way to fix the problem without ripping the entire layout apart and starting from scratch. So there will forever be 2 hidden photos on this layout. Hope that gave you a good laugh on this Monday morning.

Hello Friday

Came across this the other day. I think I need it.

Lucky for me I work at a scrapbook store and have a feeling these will be making their way into my hot little hands in no time.

How about a couple more sneaks? The first is for a project I'll reveal to you on Monday for the Scrapping Everyday Miracles Sketch/Technique Challenge.

This next one, I can't reveal to you until February (it's not that far away really). I had this idea of how I wanted to use this paper, and needed to get it out down on paper right away. I wasn't thinking about the fact that I can't actually show you for a bit yet. Sorry, hope you'll bare with me.

What does your weekend look like? Pretty much the same as usual around here. I'm really hoping to get a handle on my printer and my Moments In Between album on Saturday. I sure would love to have something to show you early next week. I'd also really like to work with this sketch for the Creative Scrappers site.

This is so up my ally. Plus I got my January kit from Studio Calico last week, and have yet to create with it. Here's hoping.

Head Over Heels

The January kit from My Scrapbook Nook was filled with Lily bee - Head Over Heels goodies. I had a lot of fun working with this kit. There were Maya Road chipboard elements that will have to find another home, but everything else was divine.

This first layout is a direct Stacey Michaud lift. She's one of the DT members over at the Nook and has a wonderfully linear style. I loved this layout when she posted it in the gallery, and jump started my own creative mojo by lifting it, and adding a little bit of Sherri to it here and there. (Please note that I received her permission to post this layout online in advance, she's a sweetie like that)

I had these photos sitting around for several months already. Guess they were just waiting for this paper to come along. They're a perfect match.

Last is a more recent photo of the girls (taken in the back of the vehicle on the way to Grandma & Grandpas for Christmas dinner). Love that the colours in their jackets match the papers so well too.

I know doilies are no longer scrappy fashion, but I'm still loving them. This one is actually from a party supply store package.

I have a few more layouts ready for viewing, but some need to wait for their respective posts over at Scrapping Everyday Miracles, and some just need to be photographed.
Speaking of Scrapping Everyday Miracles have you had a chance to consider creating something for Challenge #12. There's still time, and Monika has a generous RAK up for grabs for one lucky winner. I'm sure enjoying getting to know the ladies over there. Nicole and Wendy have very tender hearts, and have been so wonderful about welcoming me and helping my to find my footing. I'm excited about what the next several months will have in store for us. I'm especially excited about the new 'faces' we've been seeing around the blog. It's wonderful to be meeting people from all over the world and to share our faith, and scrappy journeys together. I feel very blessed to be where I am.

My Moments In Between album, or Project Life as it's more commonly known is causing me grief. I feel sad about it. It is just not coming together the way I'd like. I know it's new so it will take some time. It's not even the capturing the little things that's the problem. I've taken some notes, jotted stuff down on scraps and cards, taken the photos. That's all good. It's the lack of supplies, and the difficulty printing that I'm having. I cannot for the life of me figure out how to print properly on our printer, it's making me crazy. I'll specify a print at 3 inches wide by 4 inches high, and it will come out as 4x4. Because I'm trying to split my 4x6 pocket into two that's causing a problem. Plus I don't have the right page protectors. Remember I said I started this late, well now I'm paying for it. I've got last weeks photos in the page protectors with a bunch of blank space (where the photo is to small for the slot) that needs to be filled. I had to walk away from it tonight. Hoping that tomorrow I'll have some new perspective. I really, really want to run out and buy a new printer, one that's easy enough for a monkey to use, and that can stay in my scrap space so I'm not having to run up and down the stairs all evening (lazy, I know). Sorry for the rant. But if this is going to be a place of honesty you had to know that despite my heartfelt, sincere, and hopeful post from Monday, it's a different day today. Hopefully tomorrow and into the weekend will be better. I'm hoping I can just get over it, get it done and move on. I know that in the big picture, fifty some weeks from now these first few pages won't matter. My Title page was in Top 3 over at 2 peas for a few hours today, and Amy Tangerine, yes you heard me, the lovely inspiration and designer of her own line with American Crafts, even commented on it, saying she loved it - yay me.

Sorry for the rambling. To make up for it how about I share some cards I made a while back. I was thinking they'd make good teacher gifts. I can't decide if they need a sentiment or not. What do you think?

The bullet list

I have got to get back on track with scheduled posts for sure. As much work as NaBoPo was it felt better organized around here.

I feel like I've been neglecting my blog, when really I haven't there's just a lot going that I still have to share. To remedy that I give you the bullet list. Some of you may actually prefer this to my ramblings, lol.

1. I have yet to print, sort, and enter my week one photos for my Moments In Between Album. It's driving me crazy that I'm already behind, only two weeks into the project.

2. We are taking the girls to Disney Wold in two weeks. We're all very excited about this, as none of us have been before. It's something both my hubby and I wanted to do as children, (who doesn't right?!). We told the girls in a very fun way on New Year's Eve. We can not wait to see and experience 'The Greatest Place On Earth' together. We've invited my in-laws to join us so, that only adds to the excitement. We've rented a house (based on a friend's past experience there), and will have plenty of room, and our own private, screened in pool.

3. I created 3 layouts (one is a lift) in 3 hours with the brand new Jan kit from My Scrapbook Nook. That was a shock for me, I usually find Lilybee difficult to work with. I'm really loving this kit though. Leah does a fab job putting them together. If you haven't heard about the New Year promo, you really should hop over there and check it out. Here are some sneaks...

4. There's also another Card Class going on there in February. Last time we used the wonderful My Mind's Eye Lost and Found 2 line. This time Leah, and Danni will be using Crate's Paper Heart Collection, it's super cute and great for V-Day, Birthday, and everyday girlie cards.

5. I got an email yesterday from Scrapbook News & Review stating that they have accepted all six of the projects I submitted to them for publication in this month's magazine. That was a scrappy ego boost for sure. It's an online magazine, so the most I'll be able to show you once it's live is screen shots. But I'll be sure to share.

6. I am loving the weather this winter thus far. It freaks me out a little as it's so not what we're accustomed to, but -25 C for days on end is no fun for anyone. At -6 to +6 C everyone can find something to be happy about. The best part is around noon when the sun makes an appearance. Love that.

7. I discovered this sweet little shop today.

It's called Greatest View, and they have such sweet scrappy stuff. Check out those doilies, and chevron badges. I could find a use or two or sixteen for those. Gail is having a giveaway right now, you should really check it out.

8. Did you watch Grey's Anatomy the other night. I finally watched it, and am so glad it's back. So happy for Derek & Meredith (yes I realize they're not real people, but I get wrapped up in characters so easily, and love them like friends).

9. I got THE BEST scrappy related email the other day. Even better than the one from SNR. I was so shocked when I opened it that the squeal I let out, actually startled my half sleeping kids in the back of the van. I can't tell you about it yet, but can't wait until I can.

10. Apparently bullets for me are a little lengthier than the norm. Hope you'll forgive me.

I'm up today with a Word of the Month post over at Scrapping Everyday Miracles. The word that kept coming back to me when considering this post was Grow. You can read a little more about how that came to be in today's SEM post. The way I'm focusing on growth this month is through my scrapping. I've come to understand something over the past few weeks about the way I scrap. The whole reason I scrap is to document our family's memories in a fun and creative way. I want my children, and hopefully even their children one day, to be able to look back and see the way we lived life as they were growing up. I want them to be able to recall with detail the things that happened within our family. What I've come to realize, however, is that I don't often scrap the everyday things about our life. If you were to look through my albums you would see a lot of events. Things like first time away at camp for each of them, music recitals, dance recitals, Christmas, ski vacations, birthday parties, and other such events. There are not a whole lot of pages that document the every day goings on of our family. Things like breakfast around the table, the drives to and from activities, the 'just hanging out with friends', the time outs, the hugs and kisses at the end of the day, and other such activities. All the things I count as direct blessings from the Lord, somehow go missed in my effort to capture the 'events'. This month, I want to grow in the way I chose to document our life. It's not always a party around here, that's for certain, and I want my albums to reflect that. I want to leave an honest all encompassing documentation of our life. Albums where my kids remember the good, the not so good, and everything in between of growing up in our home. I have no doubt this album, our Moments In Between album, will help us all to see how truly blessed we are. From the fact that they are likely not wearing the same outfit from one page to the next, to the fact that they have many people in their lives who love and care about them, to the fact that every night they rest their head on a comfy pillow in a warm bed within the walls of a beautiful home. WE count each one of these as tremendous blessings. I hope to create albums where we are able to remember and reflect on these simple things just as much as all the events that will have help enriched their young lives. The everyday things will take just as high of a standing as far as photos goes. My Moments In Between album will be a year long, intentional attempt to remember the everyday blessings in our family's life. This is very much the same idea as Project 365, Month In The Life, and Project Life that have all been very much talked about in the past few weeks in and around the scrappy world. I thought I would give my album a new name, however. I just wanted to personalize it for me, and help give the understanding to my family of what exactly the point of the camera coming out a lot more often was. It's all in an attempt to capture the realness of our lives. I'm hopeful that I can keep up with this. I'm really trying not to over think it, and just snap away. What I'm not so sure on is the actual layout of the album, it's all so new to me. I've not purchased any of the pre-made resources that would likely speed up the 'getting it all in an album' part. I've been looking around on the more popular sites/store and most things are sold out. For now I've grabbed myself a package of page protectors, a couple of sheets of paper with pre-made journaling cards, and that's it. I'm hoping to learn from other bloggers out there tips that work best for them, and what products they find the most useful. If you've got any, please link me up in the comments section. I'd love to hear them. For now I'll share with you my title page and a handful of photos from week number one. I'm going to try documenting a week (on two pages) at a time to begin with. if once a week turns out to be too much, I may change it up to once a month.

October Afternoon Holdiay Style

I took a break from the Crate Paper goodness that filled the December kit at My Scrapbook Nook, to use a little October Afternoon Holiday Style. This is such a cute line. I couldn't wait to use it with some random Christmas photos. I did these two layouts highlighting some fun stuff about my holiday experience.

I took a lot of photos this Christmas, more than usual, but this one really stood out for me. It's my father-in-law, my hubby, and his nephew all on the same couch. That's a rare photo op for sure. So glad I got it.

I have a little of both lines left and want to use them to scrap the rest of my Christmas photos. I'm really hoping to do a fun layout using a lot of tiny pictures.

I had a lot of fun scrapping Christmas photos so far this year. I think it was a combination of having a lot of photos to choose from and two lines that were very easy to work with. I received some fun recognition over at Two Peas for a couple of the layouts I shared with you just before Christmas. Three of the layouts went Top 3 with in 3 days. Two I've already shared with you in a previous post, and this was the third.

Scrapping Everyday Miracles - Challenge 12

Some of you may have noticed that Challenge 12 was not posted until just tonight. There was a little bit of a glitch, but it's all been resolved now. The challenge is to scrap about a dream you have or have had. My layout documents the fact that I am currently living one of my dreams. Ever since I fell in love with this scrappy hobby I've wanted to work in a scrappy store. It's a dream that came true only a few months ago through one of the sweetest people I know. If you've been a follower of mine, for some time now, you will have already heard me speak about Sharon. I met her at her store: The Scrapbook Cottage, a wonderful little scrap store just outside the city. She carries all the latest product, offers a great loyalty program, and is just simply a sweet woman through and through. When she told me that she was opening a second store just a short distance from my house, I was over the moon excited for her. I offered to give her my time as an employee (just a polite way of saying, that I pretty much begged her for a job, lol). Luckily for me, she thought I would be a good fit for the store. You may think that simply working in a scrappy store is anything but dreamy. For me, however, it most certainly is. It is a way for me to fuse my love of meeting new people, hearing their story, seeing, and working with new product, and a variety of manufacturers, and most importantly helping others to fall more in love with this wonderful way of capturing, and documenting their own story. I believe there's nothing more compelling between us as people than story, our story, God's story unfolding in and through us. Capturing it through photos, and documenting it in a fun, and attractive way is a great way for us to realize and appreciate God's many blessings in our life, and a wonderful way to pass our story down through the ages. The opportunity to be a part of that, a couple of times a week, for others, brings me tremendous joy.

My passion for story is taking a new turn this year. I'm excited to share it with you, but have yet to figure out the best way to start. Bear with me, I'll be sure to share with you as soon as I have something concrete to show you.

Welcome to 2012

Can you even believe it? Twenty-twelve already. Wasn't it just recently that we were all concerned about Y2K and the change of a millennium? Now, here we are, already twelve years later.

A new year brings with it a new look here at faithandscraphappiness. Not sure how I feel about the new Blogger interface. I haven't found it intuitive, and spent a good deal of time on it yesterday removing the old look and updating with this one. I was going for simple with just a touch of vintage. I found it quite difficult, actually to find something suitable. The free templates I came across, are rather bold in colour, and fairly busy as far as design goes. This one will do for now, but I may have to start thinking about a custom designs. What do you think of the look? Do you find the post font difficult to read? I readily welcome any feedback you may have.

Hello friends,

It seems to be somewhat of a trend for scrappy bloggers to end the year with a review of their favorite layouts created over the year. I've decided to join in. Looking back over the work I've done over the course of the previous twelve months, it's been neat to see how my style has evolved and improved. It's also interesting to see how I seem to work more easily with certain manufacturers over others. I am so thankful to My Scrapbook Nook. Because of the wonderful kits that Leah puts together month after month I have been able to thoroughly enjoy this hobby, having the very latest in scrappy goodies make their way to my mailbox every month. It's been almost a year since I started this blog, and I thank each of you for joining me on this journey checking in from time to time, and especially for the kind words of support and encouragement you take the time to willingly offer me. It has been a fun 11 months together, and I look forward to many more stories, layouts, and heart to hearts with you. Last month I began following a tradition (started by Stephanie Howell) called Blog Your Heart. It is scheduled for the last day of every month. A time to just get out what's been on my heart. I will defer that post to another day this month in lieu of the fact that this post will be photo heavy, and therefore a little longer than usual. Sharing a post I read today on Proverbs 31 Ministries. I love this post. it is very much the beat of my heart for this season and the coming year.

“Now when the queen of Sheba heard of the fame of Solomon concerning the name of the Lord, she came to test him with hard questions.” I Kings 10:1 (NKJ)

The Queen of Sheba was wealthy and beautiful. She had everything a queen could want – gold, silver, ivory, precious jewels and servants taking care of all her needs.
Well, almost everything.
She’d heard about the famous King Solomon and his miraculous God. Even though her people had many gods to worship, none intrigued her like the Lord God of Israel. Her heart was so moved by His Name she traveled 1,400 miles across the desert sands of Arabia to visit King Solomon, a man who knew this God personally.
Camels can travel around 20 miles a day, so the trip would take her six months each way. She brought a great caravan of servants, loads of spices, gold and unusual woods to give as gifts to Solomon. Her heart and soul longed for riches she did not have, and she sensed they would be discovered through him.
When she finally arrived, she stood before the grandest palace she had laid eyes on. But her purpose wasn’t to see the most beautiful archeological place ever built, it was to find a secret treasure.
Scripture tells us she talked to Solomon for hours, asking him deep questions about God. Based on her response, she found what she had longed for and declared, “Blessed be the LORD your God” (1 Kings 10:9a NKJ).
The Queen of Sheba took great pains to find wisdom, yet the wisdom available to her at that time was the lesser wisdom of a man. Even so, Jesus mentions the Queen in Matthew 12:42 and honors her desire for His wisdom.
The wisdom we have access to through Jesus far outshines Solomon’s. If the Queen of Sheba would travel six months to find truth, how much more should we search for wisdom by opening our Bibles and hearts to Him in prayer?
When people travel to our home this week, it will not be the seasonal décor or cleanliness that will ultimately impress them. It won’t be a perfectly sculpted yard or a new car in the garage. It will be spiritual insight and the presence of grace they will be drawn to — through the Holy Spirit living in us. When we share the love of our God with them they will have visited a wealthy home.
As rich as Queen Sheba or King Solomon’s palaces.
Our home is where our heart is, and our heart is Christ’s home — a dwelling place for the Lord. Let’s be sure to spend time with Him this week so we can be filled with love and prepared with wisdom to offer our guests. May those who enter our homes this Christmas, and in the New Year to come, find treasures that people have traveled the whole earth in search of!

Dear Lord, I want every person who walks into my home to find the riches that only You can deliver. Help me to be a conduit for Your wisdom and love. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Christmas Shares

Thought I'd share with you the layouts I created the other day. My Scrapbook Nook's December kit was full of the fabulous Crate Peppermint line. I'm not normally big on theme papers, but this line, and several others this year, to be honest was way too cute not to get excited about. Not to mention, it's Crate Paper, so I'd be hard pressed NOT to like it. *sigh* What it would be like to be a part of that DT and work with their product all the time?!

Would you believe me if I told you that I only printed a couple, (and I'm not exaggerating) photos from last year's Christmas holiday? I had in mind to create a mini album, so I never even scrapped any layouts, until this year. I can think of 2 that I've done, but that's it. Because my time the other day was limited I wanted to scrap photos that I had on hand, ready to go. This one we picked up just the other day in church. It was taken there at a little photo booth they had set up, as part of an activity during the family service on November 26.

This one, as you can tell is from way back when the kids were little. Yes, I really did have it printed and ready to go. (I still have an old Creative Memories photo file full of photos that never got scrapped waiting for my attention. Most are not great, as my photography skills were lacking, but there are some gems that need to be scrapped. New Year's resolution perhaps?!) When Eden saw it she said "Aww, no picture of me?" I had to tell her the reason she was missing in the photos was because she was terrified of Mrs Claus, and was squirming and wriggling so bad the photo was super blurry. She thought that was pretty funny, and forgave the fact that she is missing.

Lastly, I saw this idea at the scrapbook store where I work. It's a Christmas card holder. I save most of my cards from year to year, but they're packed away in a box. This fun little booklet, is a great way to store them. Now I can pull them out year after year, and see how people have changed.

Getting Sketchy

Today is my first DT post over Scrapping Everyday Miracles. The third Monday of every month is a Sketch or Technique challenge. I love that there's a little variety in what they post and when on their site. Sketches are one of my go to inspiration starters when I'm in a slump. Check out the post here. A Layout & A Winner

Happy Friday friends,

Exciting plans for the weekend? I bet a lot of you are already in the swing of some early family gatherings. We are feeling the need for a break around here. I think the fact the the kids are in school right to the end of next week, dh is working a lot of extra hours, the sun only shines for a few hours a day, and it's grey and drab more days than not outside is leaving something to be desired these days. Rather than a sense of joy and excitement, we're just simply maintaining the status quo. I have no doubt those "feeling" will come. Sometimes, however, we have to will ourselves to believe it before we can feel it. Wouldn't you agree? I, for one am looking forward to the relaxed pace of Christmas break. I think the whole family is. The girls are getting a new game for Christmas, that I'm hoping will be a hit, and something we can enjoy as a family. I'm also thinking that some scheduled 'family play dates' are in order over the holidays to create some time to just be together, enjoying one another. What kind of traditions do you have for Christmas break (kids or not), I'd love to hear them.

I created a layout the other day. It's all about me. I had the idea to document some of the things that define me at 37. It seemed like the proper way to say goodbye to that year, before welcoming in 38. This was my first attempt at painting on my page. I have a lot to learn, let's just leave it at that :) Because it's been so long since I've scrapped I felt a little lost when putting this page together. It actually sat on my table for 3 days before I glued it all down. I just wasn't loving it, but couldn't figure out what exactly needed to be changed about it. In the end, I decided to just glue it down, and move on for fear of not getting it done at all. I used the new My Mind's Eye Funday line, along with some Jillibean Soup, Pink Paislee, Studio Calico, and Basic Grey. The doily is actually by "Touch" the makers of plastic plates, cups and cutlery you can find in any supermarket. They were a great deal, a package of 30, in 3 different sizes for $1.50.

This is what the 10 points say:
(1) I cry easily - even during commercials
(2) I walk the thin line between normalcy and OCD
(3) My Grade 12 Math teacher failed my twice, it irritates me to this day.
(4) I've wanted a nose ring for years. Eight days before my 38th birthday I got one.
(5) I love watching football, even more when I'm alone (no one shushes me)
(6) My feet are almost alwasy cold.
(7) I get so ridiculously attached to book characters, that I physically miss them once I finish.
(8) It concerns me daily that I may fail my children as a mother.
(9) I've always wanted an older sister, and still do.
(10) I have no doubt that if it were not for the grace of God, my life would look utterly and completely different than it does today. I am so grateful.

Echo Park Christmastime

I loved the Echo Park Wintertime line from last Christmas so much, that I bought every sheet in the entire line, with great plans to complete a December Daily with it. Needless to say, since you're seeing it here on cards, and NOT a December Daily, I did not complete an album last year. It happens. We have grand crafty ideas of what we'd like to accomplish, and this little thing called life gets in the way. I sincerely have such regard for those who manage to work full time, even part time job, shuffle kids around, maintain a home, and manage to still find the time and energy to craft at all, never mind belong to one, two, and sometimes even more design teams. I just don't understand how you are able to fit so much into the same 24 hour day that I have. Back to Echo Park, they are definitely one of my favorite manufacturers out there. Now that I work at a scrapbook store, I'll be able to get my hands on it as soon as it comes out, and that makes me happy. I only wish they'd come out with chipboard elements, they are one my favorite scrappy things to work with, next to ribbon and edger punches. Anyhow I made these cards yesterday to gift away, and wanted to share them with you too.

A couple of layouts

I had the opportunity last week to open the brand new Little Yellow Bicycle Twig line, and the brand new Echo Park Winterpark line. So, so fun working in a scrapbook store. Not only did I get to merchandise it all, I got to bring a bunch home to play with that night also. Here's what I created with each one.

I love when everything coordinates so well together,it makes scraping so much easier. I completed these layouts in about 2 hours total.

I've had so little time to scrap these days, always seems to be something going on. I did managed to make a couple of Christmas cards, that I'll share with you later, but generally my scrap room is just not seeing a lot of action. I'm looking forward to the slow down that usually comes with the start of the New Year. Can you believe it's almost 2012? I can still remember the papers we had to write in Jr. High about what we thought the world would be like in the the year 2000. Here we are almost 12 years later, and things are more the same than they are different. Still no meals in pill form, or rapid transit to the moon,lol.

Our little getaway

I had the privilege of spending this past weekend here:

The Fox Hotel & Suites Banff, Alberta

In beautiful Banff with D this weekend. Because his work's head office for the West is in Calgary we are flown out to Banff to join them at their annual Christmas party. It's fairly low key, but a nice opportunity to meet the people for whom I hear their names often. I got some great photos out in the mountains. I have even better ones from a place called Johnson Canyon just outside of Banff. D and I had went for a little hike up there on Saturday afternoon. It was just beautiful with frozen waterfalls, tunnels through the immense rock and the unmistakable beauty of God's breathtaking creation all around us.

It was a lovely weekend. Sooooo nice to have D all to myself, no pressing agenda, no shuffling to and from here and there, just the two of us surrounded by God's glorious creation. I'm sure you'll see more photos popping up on layouts soon. A huge thank you to Mom & Dad for watching the girls for us on Friday, and to my sister-in-law Carla and her kids for spending the rest of the weekend enjoying time with our them.

Unexpected Blessing

Challenge #11 is up over at Scrapping Everyday Miracles. In keeping with the theme of the gift of Christmas, this month's focus is on unexpected blessings. This was a challenge for me at first. I think I found it difficult because I was trying to think about some 'mountain moving experience' I had had in my life. The subject finally came to me. There were no moving mountains, there were, however, three gorgeous little girls.

There was a time in my life when I use to think that people who chose to have their children really close together were making a selfish choice. I can remember watching a woman trying to climb a mountain of stairs with a babe in arms and a very little one walking behind her crying, holding her arms out saying "Mommy up, mommy up", to which the mother replied, "No honey, I can't, but you can do it, come on, you can do it." For whatever reason, something went off in me at that sight. I decided at that very moment that I would never put my child through that. I decided that when I had children I was not going to be so selfish, I was going to have my children at least 2.5 years apart, if not even more so that they could at least be somewhat self-sufficient, and I wouldn't be putting them in a position where they needed to grow up too fast. Yup...I was that arrogant, and self-centered. Shameful. Fast forward about 13 years. I had an almost 3 year old and a newly weaned 6 month old. D and I had a quick weekend getaway to Vancouver to watch our favorite football team take on the Vancouver Lions. It was a fun little trip, one we'd never forget. It was on that trip that I became pregnant with Eden. I am not exaggerating when I say that I knew that that pregnancy was the beginning of something God wanted to teach me. I knew it because it meant that I was going to have three children under the age of four, and that the youngest two were going to be only fifteen months apart. At the time Eden was born Théa wasn't even walking. I wasn't going to be that mother with the babe in arms, and the younger one trailing behind. No. No, I was the mother with a babe in a car seat carrier, a second babe in arms, and a toddler trailing behind wanting to be picked up. Ugh. That was hard. It was an extremely difficult time in my life. It changed me to be sure. My mother, had passed away 3 years prior, my good friends had moved out of the city, one, out of the province, we had moved into a new neighbourhood where the neighbours were busy with their own lives, and I had been laid off from my job one month prior. It was just plain difficult. God, however, was not unaware of my circumstance. He was using everything about it to teach me some invaluable lessons. Lessons I don't think I could have learned, or appreciated as much otherwise. I realized through those trying days that I was not nearly as sensitive, or compassionate a person as I thought. I realized through the sleep deprivation, and long lonely days, that I was rather judgmental of others, their choices, and their beliefs. And most importantly I realized that I had become the center of my life. The Lord was a part of my life, but somehow He had become more like an accessory than a central figure. I realized that because of my self-focus I had developed characteristics and character traits there were unpleasing to God, and to others, even though no one ever pulled me aside to say so. God used the experience of me being so far in over my head in experience, and responsibility to teach me how to become more compassionate towards others. It taught me the importance of seeing others as women and men made in God's image. He taught me that I needed to humble myself, and extend the same grace toward others as I would have expected them to offer me.

Three babies in less than four years brought with them a lot of tears, a lot of laughter, a lot of photographs, and dirty diapers, and a lot of laundry. More importantly however they offered the opportunity for me to grow up emotionally, and spiritually. The lessons I learned during that chapter in my life helped me to become more of the woman God is calling me to be. Grace and humility speak more loudly than any words ever could. They are a universal language pointing others towards God, and His incredible gift to us. The gift of a relationship with Him, made possible through his Son Jesus Christ, "so that the grace of God that is reaching more and more people, may cause Thanksgiving to overflow to the glory of God."

There was a scrap twist to the challenge also. It was to incorporate a treasure onto our page. My treasure is hanging from the bow. It's the pendant from a souvenir necklace I bought while on that unforgettable trip to Vancouver in 2002. Because the story is on the sensitive side, I wanted to keep the journaling hidden. I created a pocket behind the photo to hold the journaling card I'll fill out with the story of my "Unexpected Blessing"

I usually hand write my journaling, mostly for speed sake, but this time I wanted to use the computer and printer to get the whole story into such a small space. With everything going on the past two weeks, however, I just haven't gotten around to it, but you get the idea.

Christmas Inspiration Week - Day 4

Happy first of December friends!

Today I'm going to share with you the wreath I made the other day. I've been invited to play along and create something for the Christmas Inspiration Week blog hop that's going on over at Scrapping Everyday Miracles. The request came at the perfect time as I knew I was going to make a Christmas wreath, and wanted to include a tutorial to help you make one too. I decided to go with a more contemporary look, rather than the traditional red and green.

Here are the supplies I purchased.

In keeping with the contemporary look I chose a grapevine wreath over the evergreen.

Those long narrow brown envelopes in the top right photo are green and white floral wire. Floral wire is really important when creating a wreath with a lot of elements, if you want them to stay securely in place for the long haul.

The first thing I did was use wire cutters to cut all the flowers, berries, and sprigs off the stems. Keeping some stems long just in case they needed to be wrapped several times.

Once I had everything cut up, I made my bow. You'll notice in the supplies collage that I bought two full spools or ribbon. I knew I wanted one large bow on the bottom of the wreath, and that requires a lot of ribbon. The other spool was to use throughout the rest of the wreath. Because I don't know how to make a 'professional' bow, I simply pulled a long strand of ribbon from the spool and began looping and gathering until I had something I liked. I then secured it together with a piece of floral wire. The loop I began with was too large for the bow. I didn't like that so I tried to create a smaller look to it by hot gluing a gold ball and some glass berries directly to the inside, center of the loop. Here's how I put them together.

They were still too small so I added another larger gold ball, and a button like this.

Still too big of a loop, so I squished the loop down, held in place with some white floral wire, then hot glued the gold button to the center. I like the final result.

I actually added a piece of felt to the back of the bow before hot gluing it to the wreath. It will help to keep the bow secure.

When I was happy with the bow and its placement on the wreath, I began adding everything else. I started with two of the the larger flowers and built out around them. Most elements were simply stuck into the wreath like this, and secured with floral wire.

See the long stem I left on. I used the floral wire to tie it down to the wreath.

I kept adding, and securing with wire as I went, like this.

Because the floral wire is so thin it can be tricky to get back up around the vine to make a knot. Needle nose pliers work like a charm, and are a must have when working with wire.

I added a little more trim in amongst the elements also. I simply tied it directly to the wreath and added the gold balls, and berries on top of it. I snipped triangle shapes into the ends of the ribbon to add a little flaire.

Here's what I've done so far.

The final touch was to add the sprigs to the mid-right side creating balance. That was tricky and required four hands at times, simply because the sprig was so long, it needed securing at several places along the way. Hopefully you'll have someone near by. Here's the finished project. I really hope the recipient likes it.

Blog your heart

I've been a fan of Stephanie Howell's blog for some time now. A while back she invited her readers to join her as she blogged one day a month whatever was on her mind. No theme, no layouts, or scrap business, just whatever was on her heart at that point in time. I really liked the idea and tucked it in the back of my mind to use at some point on my own blog. Today is the the day. I thought it would be a great way to finish NaBoPo (National Blog Posting Month). Here's what's been on my heart these days.

1. I am pretty proud of myself for having blogged every single day (and twice in one day a couple of weeks ago) this month. I have a ton of respect for those who do it all the time, especially those who actually have something to say each day, and don't just throw up a photo for the day.

2. I've had a real sense of blessing lately when ever I grocery shop. Sounds weird, I know, but for some reason the last few times I've stopped to pick up groceries I've been overcome with gratefulness as I'm loading the back of my van with everything my family needs, and even things we just simply want, to fill our tummies. I thank God that we have all we could ever need here in North America, it is a luxury so many people on this planet cannot afford.

3. I've still not set decorated our home for Christmas. I've noticed this year, that many people in our neighbourhood put up their tree on Remembrance Day. I have never noticed before that a lot of people seem to do this. I think the fact that we have 3 birthdays in our home between November 20 and December 10th is what keeps me from doing it any earlier than the second week of December. We also prefer a real tree, so that prevents us from putting one up too soon.

4. I'm wanting to change up the look of my blog and go to something really simple. Clean lines and only a pop of colour. The only thing stopping my, is the time involved. Whenever I've changed the look of my blog I end up getting sucked into it, adding this, removing that and tweaking away for an hour or so before I'm happy with it. I've decided to leave it alone for now, until I have some undivided time to devote to it.

5. I've been enjoying my job at the Scrapbook Cottage, and feel privileged to be there every time I walk through the door. The girls I'm working with are all so sweet. We all come from such different backgrounds, it makes for a lot to talk when we're not serving customers.

6. I'm feeling more tired these days than usual. I don't know if it's the fact that I haven't worked out in a few months (oh the shame, but there's no time), or the fact that there's less sunshine these days, or simply the fact that I'm on my feet a few more hours per week now that I'm working, and my old body has to get use to it.

7. I'm looking for some good ideas for a vacation for our family this winter. We've decided not to go skiing as we have for the past 2 years, but now need something else to do. It was nice to have something to look forward to in the cold winter months. I'd really like to take the family to Disney World, but don't even know where to start to book it. I've heard of amazing deals some are able to get. I want one of those too :)

8. Feeling grateful for my mother and father in-law, who have so graciously agreed to watch our girls this weekend, so D and I could get away to Banff for a couple of nights. I am so looking forward to the fresh mountain air, and getting to spend some time alone with my honey. It has been such a busy year for him. A lot of travel, a lot of early mornings, and a lot of late nights. This will hopefully make up for all the date nights we've skipped over the last 9 months or so.

9. Lastly, I'm looking forward to a fun announcement that should be made next week. Can't wait to share it with you.

A winner & A Sketch

I put together a fun little scrappy package last night for one lucky winner. A selection of papers from the recently released Echo Park Times & Seasons line with coordinating trim and embellishments. There's enough there to scap a couple of pages or complete several cards, or even alter a project. Once again Random.Org helped me to select a winner, but first a layout.

Creative Scrappers sketches are my go to when I'm looking for a little design inspiration. Sketch 183 went up last week, and was created by fellow Winnipeger Nicole Nowosad. Once again, it didn't fail to get me the creative boost I was looking for.

In our house
today is all about the
Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

D and I are big fans of our local football team. Three hours of our day today, will be spent cheering on our favorite Canadian Football Team with friends. The Blue and Gold as they're often referred to have had a spectacular season this year. They came out with a bang and spent seven weeks at the top of the standings. There was some faltering in the mid-season, but they got right back on track to earn their spot in the biggest Canadian sporting event of the year, the Grey Cup. We are so proud of these guys, many of whom are our brothers in Christ. They've worked very hard, and sacrificed a lot to get here. Time away from home for many who are from the US, time away from their home church, and close friends. These are all factors that play into what shapes these guys and grows them in humility, grace, and character throughout the season. We are so thankful for our friend, Lorne Korol. He's the Blue Bomber chaplain. He encourages these guys with scripture, and teachings throughout the year, reminding them of the God who created them, and like Ephesians 2:10 says "prepared good works for them to do in advance". Football is just one of those good works. It's their job, the way they provide for their families. Their office so to speak, where they live out the plans the Lord has for them. Where they shine the light of Christ through everything they do, everything they say, and how they act towards their fellow teammates, and opponents in the game. I pray for their safety today as they play, that the Lord would watch over them, and keep each one safe in body, mind, and spirit.

We are in the middle of a busy weekend here. Seems to be a recurring thing for us. Tonight we'll be taking kicking off the Advent Season at church with a fun family event. I'll be leading worship with some friends. We'll be rocking out to upbeat, energetic Christmas tunes, like you've never heard them before. The kids love them, and have a ton of fun dancing and singing along.

Meet the Birthday Boy

This guy makes my life so full. He's my partner in this journey called life. He's supportive, giving, caring, funny, intelligent, a lover of golf and football, a hard worker, and mentor to his colleagues. He's one of the best dads I know and the perfect piece to our Funk family puzzle. I love him immensely, and consider my life richly blessed because of him. Things have been super crazy for him these past few months with work, and today is no exception. In spite of the busyness of his day, I wish him the very best of birthdays. My prayer is that he'll know the love of the Father, and experience the very best this day has to offer as he works with pride and with integrity to provide for his family. May he know just how much all of his girls are crazy for him.

Working on a few things

Christmas Tags

I had a chance to do a little creating yesterday. I made a few Christmas tags with Echo Park Christmastime papers.

I started a layout also, but now I am stuck. The design just is coming together as I had planned. I have to fit a lot of journaling on the page, and want to keep it hidden. It'll come to me. For now, it just sits there scoffing at me. I think part of the problem also is that I'm a little preoccupied in my mind. There's a lot to accomplish in the next few days and only me to get it done. Plus there are so few hours of sunshine during this time of year, that simply taking photos of projects can be a challenge. You must complete the project on one day, and wait until the next day to photograph it. Well at least, that's how I must do it, because projects take me so long. Alas, it's called life right?! Sometimes things chug alone smoothly, and other times you fight just to keep your head above water. It helps to take time to connect with my maker, asking Him to reveal His will to me. Asking him to take off my plate those things that are not important, or can be done at another time, or by another individual. I thank God for his his willingness to be an active participant in my life.

Hope you're in the middle of a fulfilling week friends, whether or treading water, or putting on the life vest to help you stay afloat. May you see God at work around you, and know that what you are doing matters.

An apology & a giveaway

I really have nothing new to say or post for you today. I apologize. Between working, and volunteer stuff, and Isabelle's birthday I have not had any time to scrap in the past few days. I'm really missing it, but know that first things must come first. I love that quote Denzel Washington uses in the movie The Great Debaters "we do what we gotta do, so we can do what we want to do". He said his own father use to use that line on him and his siblings as he was growing up. I have no complaints, life is good. This, is simply our busy season. with 3 birthdays, Christmas and our anniversary all in the same 30 day period. It's time to buckle up and prepare for the ride.

I had a fun bit of news yesterday. Another one of my layouts made Top 3 over at Two Peas in a Bucket, in two of the three categories.

How about I offer a RAK to make up for my lack of substance today? I'll put together an assortment of scrappy goodies, and do a draw for a giveaway at the end of the week. Random Love

I've got nothing but bits and pieces left of Crate's Random line. It was most definitely my favorite CHA release this summer. I'm hoping that I'll still be able to knock out a few more cards with the remnants. I think this is the last layout I'll be able to create with it.

Théa said the tile of the layout should have read "Beautiful girls...and one handsome dog" lol.

Happy 12th Birthday Isabelle

It was 12 years ago today, after 36 hours of painfully, exhausting labour that our first baby girl entered this world. Today will be spent celebrating her, in all her beautiful, athletic, saucy, intelligent, funny, sarcastic, lovable self. After church, it's lunch, then shopping with grandma, capped off with dinner out, and cake with extended family. My life changed forever the day I discovered I was going to be a mother. This girl has brought us so much joy in her short life. Watching her grow into a fine young lady is a pure privilege. There have been many tears, much heartache, and several moments of wondering if I am on the right track with the mothering thing to be sure. It's a job I wouldn't trade for anything in the world, though. It comes with the good the bad, and the ugly. But all of that is secondary to the incredible way a child fills your heart to overflowing by simply existing. I saw this quote on Pinterest recently by Rajneesh "The moment a child is born, the mother is also born. She never existed before. The woman existed, but the mother, never. A mother is something absolutely new." Happy Birthday my girl, thank you for making me a mother. I hope you love your day, and that twelve will be a sweetly fun year for you.

Jazz Beauties

Théa and her best little dance buddy were over the moon happy to be sharing the stage at the Canadian National Dance Championships (CNDC) this year. Their group performed a Jazz number clad in sparkle, and shimmer, with bright pink boas. They were so cute, smiling from ear to ear while working out every move they had learned, and rehearsed for weeks. I snapped this shot of the two of them after the performance. Seeing them all made up like this in their 'stage faces' makes me a little nervous about how quickly the day will arrive when they want to look like this all the time. For now I'll just continue to enjoy the two of them in all their nine year old glory, no make up, no costumes, just good old fashioned giggles, girly talk, and fun.

This has been quite the week, and the weekend isn't going to slow down either. A date with my mother-in-law on Saturday, and celebrating Isabelle's 12th birthday on Sunday. Gosh I can barely believe it's been that long already.

Another Publication

A friend of mine turned me onto Scrapbook News and Review recently. It's an online crafting magazine that is loaded with inspiration. According to them each issue is jam packed with dozens of articles, technique tutorials, and hundreds of layouts, cards and projects! We also have sketches, product reviews, digital templates and a rockin' mixed media section. It really is worth the time to grab a cup of coffee and take in all the eye candy, learning a thing or two along the way. I submitted a card I created for their "Welcome Home" category this month, and it was selected for publication. Yay! I can't show you the project, unfortunately, but wanted to share the news. I'll be sure to share it with you once the 30 days are up.

It's been a long week here. Dh has been out of town for 3 days, and work, the kids schedules, and volunteer duties have kept me very busy. I feel like I'm dragging my feet around from one day to the next. I think the lack of sun has something to do with my demeanor also. We've not had sun for the past 2 days. It would seem as though we likely won't have any for the next few either. I'm a person who can be easily affected by the weather. I don't like that fact, but it is what it is. When it's grey and rainy I feel sleepy and apathetic. When it's cold and slushy, I stay in, and watch too much tv, and on the few days of the year when the sun shines in all it's glory, I have a ton of energy, am very productive, and have extra bounce in my step. I miss the sun. Not only would I feel more energized, but I could also photograph the few projects I've completed to share with you. I have a little time tomorrow, so I'll try my best to capture a shot as best as I can, sun or no sun.

For now, how about an oldie of dh and I. The photo was taken last year about this time in Banff. It is so gorgeous there, the mountains never fail to captivate me. We'll be back there again in less than two weeks. Can't wait to get away with just my guy for a little R&R.

Summer Fave

Do you ever have that photo that you love so much you insist on scrapping it more than once. I've been known to do that. I don't think there's anything wrong with it really. This photo is definitely my summer fave of the girls.

It's a rare opportunity to get the three of these girls in front of the camera, at the same time, and smiling. I wish they would look this much 'in like' more often, lol. The sun was at the perfect spot in the sky to capture some great lighting shots just before pulling out of the parking lot, after picking the younger two up from camp one evening in July.

I put this layout together the other day, but already know that I want to scrap it again using Crate's Random papers.

Using Studio Calico Classic Calico papers and embellies, and butterflies, alphas, and cardstock sticker. Other: office tags, Amy Tan washi tape, Smash stamp, Lilybee tiny alphas.

One Sweet Neighbour

Meet Kristine.

She's my neighbour, and the mother to some of my girls' best little buddies. We've been acquaintances for several years already, but have never spent any time together on our own. As it turns out we ended up buying houses on the same cul-de-sac last year. What a treat. It is so delightful to be able to just walk across the sac with a cup of coffee in hand to sit and visit with her for a moment or two after the kids have been dropped off at school. Or have her and her hubby stop by one evening for a glass of wine out on the deck, as we watch the kids play in the kiddie pool. Such a gift I tell you. The best part is that her family loves Jesus too, so we truly are 'the village' to each other as we celebrate the triumphs of our children, and proud parenting moments. And have each other to lean on, on emotionally charged days when we're left wracking our heads with frustration . We're still navigating the uncharted waters of new found friendship, learning the body language and tone of the other, and when to push and when to simply listen. Scripture says, "Ointment and perfume delight the heart. And the sweetness of a man's friend gives delight by heart and counsel". That is truly the case with this lovely woman. I count myself as blessed to have her in my life, and look forward to many more shared experiences in faith, love, friendship, and parenting together.

The journaling is hidden in a little pocket that's revealed when you pull on the green button on the right hand side of the photo. I was bucking the trend for a long time. I do that. Not sure why. Every time something emerges as a trend, or on the fast track to popularity I tend to not want to jump on the bandwagon. Sort of silly, I realize this, especially when I end up giving in eventually anyhow (Facebook, iTunes, misting, sushi). I don't always though (smoking, Twilight, Harry Potter, Project Life). Pinterest falls into the fore mentioned category. I can't remember what exactly it was that pushed me over the edge, probably something, someone had pinned that I just had to see more of. Once I visited their home page, that was it, I was hooked. There is just SO. MUCH. INSPIRATION. in one place.
If I'm in need of a laugh I go to my "makes me laugh" board and pull up pins like these:

Some cards to share

Not sure if I mentioned the card class happening over at My Scrapbook Nook in a previous post or not. Leah, and Danni have put together a class using the My Mind's Eye 6x6 paper pads, and some wonderful embellishments to match. Each day there is a card (or two some days) posted with detailed directions on how to put it together on your own. So fun, especially since I hadn't made cards in a long time. My Mind's Eye is one of my favorite manufacturers. I find their product so easy to work with. I loved both Danni, and Leah instructions, and gorgeous cards. Although I stayed pretty close to the original design I did personalize each of them to reflect a little more of my own style. Here's what I came up with

A Good Deed Repaid

So often we hear of the negative and hurtful contributions of mean spirited people in this world. It's a rare occasion when stories of kindness are shared. If you're local to Winnipeg, you may likely have heard of this story already. I was so moved when I heard about it, I knew I just had to share it here.

A semi-retired Winnipeg couple is breathing much easier these days after the help of a perfect stranger. Please take a moment to read the story here. I promise it will restore your faith in the common goodness, and acts of kindnesses of the people around you.

That extension of yourself is exactly what Jesus is talking about in Luke 10:27, when he said "love your neighbour as yourself."

Have you taken the time today to really see the world around you? Is there a way you can make someone's day a little brighter? Is there a simple act of kindness you could extend into the world around you?

We will not forget

For many November 11th means little more than a day off of school and work. For some it's the day they officially begin their Christmas decorating/shopping. But for many, it is a day to stop. To consider. To remember all that was sacrificed by so, so many. To give thanks, and be grateful for all those who went ahead. Those who gave it all, and forged the way for us, you, and me in North America to have the freedom that we have today. Some lost their lives on the field. Some lost their lives along the way, and returned home little more than empty shells of who they once were, reliving the battle in their heads, and hearts daily.

For all the brave men, and women who gave everything they had for the future of this great country,

I say Thank You!

It hardly seems enough.

Thank you, thank you, thank you.

I will never forget.

I will teach my children to do the same.

We, will never forget.

A quick card to share today.

The tag is from on office supply store, covered in a Vintage Vogue paper, and the butting is from my stash.

Made with the lovely Vintage Vogue papers, and embellies by Pink Paislee that I won at Leigh's fun crop back in October. My card supply is running low, so this was a quick and easy one to add to the stash for a last minute pick me up for someone in need. I should probably be working on Christmas cards, but it would seem I'm leaving them a little late this year. To be honest I don't give out too many anymore. I use to always print a family photo card for friends and family, but haven't done that in a few years. What's your Christmas card tradition? Have you been working on anything crafty? I also got some more amazing scrappy news last night too - it's still a secret though, but I'm bursting at the seams to tell you. Yesterday was a super duper, fun scrappy day I'll tell ya. I'm feeling very, very blessed.

Scrapping Everyday Miracles

CHALLENGE #10: Nothing speaks of God's miracles and blessing more than nature. God created a world full of wonders and they are all around us. In the Bible Jesus says that if the people stop singing God's praises even the rocks will cry out… Luke 19:40 (NIV) "I tell you," he replied, "if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out." Your challenge is to find His miracles in the natural world and what they mean to you. It could be through a beautiful landscape or the amazing intricacy of a flower. Open your eyes and camera to the created world around us. You may be surprised at what you find!

Scrap Twist – Re-purpose something to use as part of your layout. It could be a piece of vintage ephemera or an ad from your junk-mail. Or parts of packaging or other "non-scrapbooking" supplies. Get creative!

The journaling is a poem by Joan Adams Burchell.

Fresh-fallen snow, untouched by man, tops bushes, fence and tree;

The strong, gusty wind, whirling it 'round, improves and enriches its beauty.

It sauntered down in the silence of night, leaving a scenic delight;

Now, in the sun, it dances and winks as we drink in the wondrous sight.

This is a picture-post-card scene - winter at its best;

It leaves a mark etched in our heart of when winter was our guest.

I captured this photo while on the chair lift in Steamboat Colorado last Spring. The night prior we had received 12 inches of freshly fallen, powdery snow. The trees were weighted down by the sparkling beauty, and the air around us was perfectly quiet, and as still as could be. It was a beautiful moment. I am blessed to have been witness to it. My re-purposed item is a piece of felt I bought to use a floor protector under our garbage can. I used it to cut out a heart shape, and hand stitched a little burst onto it with embroidery floss. I hope you'll be inspired to come and play along with us this month. There's a great prize up for grabs from Designs by Diana. Entries are due by November 25th. Hope you pop by. Never Say Never

You've all heard the saying. I've even used the phrase. When I use the phrase these days it takes on more meaning then it use to two years ago. The fact that we have this guy is proof.

One should really think twice before using such a very definitive word like never. Just like I was never going to have my babies close together, and subsequently had two babies no more than fifteen months apart. I was also never going to be a dog owner. I didn't want the hassle of puppy training, chewed up shoes and furniture, needing a dog sitter anytime we wanted to get away, having to worry about getting home to let him out after a few hours, and on, and on. I've learned that hard won opinions can really change when there are children in the mix. Wilson came into our family after my girls spent a couple of night with their Aunt who's Poodle had just had puppies. The kids loved snuggling those little guys so much. A few weeks later they were there again. This time the puppies were walking and playing around, so even more adorable and fun. When we arrived to pick the girls up, they couldn't wait to show us all the real live toys they'd been enjoying over the past couple of days. They introduced them by name, one by one, and explained their personalities. When we met Wilson, he was lovingly being cradled in the nook of Eden's arm. It was the first time I could remember seeing my third born behave so tenderly toward anything. Even with baby dolls she had never displayed such a softness. Something in my heart broke at that moment. It filled me with pleasure to see her behave in such a way. Add to that the fact that this puppy was not like all the rest, who were nipping, and jumping, and really active. Wilson (originally named Yorkton by my nieces and nephews), was so laid back and content just to hang out and be carried around. Needless to say I was done for. It didn't take much convincing for me to agree to the responsibility of a new baby in the house. He was such a good puppy though, that the transition went quite smoothly. He trained within about two weeks, has learned a fair number of tricks, and has never chewed on shoes, or furniture. He has mangled a toy or two, and a DS game (that was a hard lesson for our oldest to learn), but that's it. Even though I say I wouldn't mind if he went to live with someone else, I can't help but wonder if I'm really fooling myself by thinking such a thing as I notice how many layouts I've completed where he is the subject.

Never say never? You bet, not unless you're prepared to consider the alternative *smile*.

Great News!

I got a job. Not that I was looking for one, but the opportunity presented itself and I leaped at it. My dear friend Sharon whom I've spoken of before is opening her second Scrapbook Store; in Winnipeg. When I heard the news I was super excited for her. She's such a sweet, sweet woman who loves Jesus and enjoys using her gifts to help others discover the world of scrapping, and documenting their own stories in a fun and creative way. Her first shop, located in Steinbach, Manitoba (about a 45 minute drive for me) recently moved to a larger, brighter location just up the street from the previous one, and is doing really well. God's timing is funny sometimes, and by funny, I mean frustrating, bewildering, exciting, and curious all at once. At the same time as she was getting ready to pack up and move her first store, the opportunity presented itself to open a shop in the city, where so many of customers reside. Of course she jumped at it, as did I, jump at the opportunity to work for her. I am so thrilled that I get to be a part of this great big dream of hers. She had very kind things to say about my working for her, that warmed my heart, and reinforced my desire to share this love of mine with others. It's a perfect job, perfect location, and from what I can gather, will be a really great team to work with. I'll only be part time, almost casual for now. I think 2 days a week is the best of both worlds. I'm not having to sacrifice my role and responsibilities as a mother, and still able to play with new product, meet other people with the same paper crafting passion as I do, and leave a little bit more of a fingerprint in the world.

The shop is scheduled to open late next week. It's still just four walls, with some paint and shelving thus far. There's still a lot of work yet to be done, but just you wait until the weekend : )

Handmade Holidays Day 3

Even though I had originally signed up for this class to challenge myself, I had to do a gut check when Day 3 was revealed. The project for that day was a homemade monogrammed wreath. Eeek, was all I could think. This is my problem. Although I may seem creative, I'm really not all that much. I recognize beauty when I see it, and can tweak it to personalize it to my own individual style, but coming up with something from nothing is almost always a challenge for me. Also, working with paper, and working with flowers, are two completely different things to me. However, as I said, I signed up for this class because I was looking to expand my creativity and push myself to work outside of the proverbial box. Off to Michaels I ventured, coupons in hand. Two hours later I had a bunch of supplies, a clean table and was ready to work. Still nervous about the project, I put it all away, and worked on something else. Typical me: a little denial, before complete and head on tackling. On Sunday I pulled it all out again, and within an hour, what I consider to be a very pretty fall decor wreath was hanging on my front door. I am so sad I didn't think to photograph the process, it would have been fun to share it with you. I learned, in the end, that putting together a wreath is really very easy. It took me longer to choose the flowers, berries, and foliage, than it actually did to put the whole thing together (well almost).

Feeling Christmasy?

I was in the mall on Tuesday and had to stop when I heard a Christmas carol playing in the store I was in. The Halloween decor isn't even packed up, and retailers are rushing us on to the next holiday. It's hard to believe that September and October are both behind us already. Why does it seem that the older I get the faster time seems to pass? Have you noticed the same thing?

I read a great devotional this morning that talked about 'home', and how it's a state of peace rather than a four walled structure. We want to go 'home for the holidays', 'home because we're sick', 'get home before dark'. I couldn't help but think how true those words really are. Growing up, I can't say I felt that way, about my own four walled structure. Home was not a place of peace, but of turmoil, and hurtful words for me. Here, in my own home, however I can say the statement is true. This, truly is the place that my heart, my body, and my soul find peace. I love pulling into my driveway, grateful for a beautiful house to call my home. I love when my family, and my dog come to greet me (not that the kids and hubby always do, but the dog...ALWAYS...I think he may be in love with me). Home is where I connect with my maker on a deeper level. Home is where my creative juices have room to move and breath. Home is where I am reminded every single day of how incredibly blessed I am. Home is where I am loved even in the midst of all my shortcomings. Home is my "shelter from the wind, and a refuge from the storm, like streams of water in the desert and the shadow of a great rock in a thirsty land". I hope, and pray that your four walls are the same for you. If, however you feel as I did growing up, that home is not a refuge, my prayer is that you will have the strength and the courage to surround yourself with people who are able to help you create that sense of safety and belonging you desire. There's no place like home, and no time like Christmas to be reminded of it.

Welcome to NaBoPo month

I discovered last year that November, is not only known for men giving up the razor for the month, and growing out long scraggly looking facial hair. November, in the blogging world, is known as National Blog Posting Month, where bloggers attempt to post a blog entry every day during the month. As, this is my first November managing a blog, this will be my first ever NaBoPo. It may be a crazy time to start with two birthdays happening this month, and Christmas right around the corner, but I'm up for the challenge. I hope to even put together a giveaway or two during the month so keep your eyes peeled for that.

Let's kick things off with a few cards that I made for the Homemade Holidays Class - Day 5. Here are the sketches we were given, and the cards I made with them.

I made these with Pink Paislee papers. They came in a door prize I won at a fundraiser crop I attended on the weekend. Leigh is a sweet woman with a heart for the Congolese people. She'll be going on a short term missions there, with a group from her church in the very near future. She put on a fabulous crop, huge tables, great food, free card classes, and a bunch of door prizes with fresh, fun new-release scrappy goodies. The prize I won came in really handy for these cards.

First ever GDT spot!

Scrapping Everyday Miracles is a site that focuses on combining a love of scrapbooking and our love for Jesus in one blog. They like to keep the focus on the miracles we witness in our lives everyday, documenting them in a fun way for future generations. I've enjoyed following along with the challenges, and love the reminder to have my eyes wide open to the ways God is constantly moving in my life.

I was asked to Guest Design for them for the month of November. I am thrilled to have the opportunity to jump in and join the rest of the talented bunch for a fun layout challenge coming up later in the month. You can check out my intro here.

I can't believe I've reached 100 posts already - yay me. Thanks to those of you who have joined me on this journey. I love your company, and being able to share snippets of my life, and this fun and creative hobby of mine with you. I thought a little give away would be appropriate to acknowledge this mile marker. Okay, no I'm kidding. I didn't make this for myself, gotchya though right?! I actually made this for a friend's sister. She had a baby boy last week. I needed a cute little card to accompany the meal I dropped off yesterday, and thought the Fine and Dandy line by My Mind's Eye would be perfect.

That's it for me today. This week has been a bit of a ride, some ups, and some down. Here's hoping next week goes a little smoother.

Handmade

Studio Calico's November kit goes on sale tonight. I love how each kit and add kits have names. Let me introduce you to Handmade. I'm digging the colour combo in this one. And look forward to working with it. It's out of my box, to be sure, for a girl who loves Create and My Mind's Eye whose lines are all neatly packaged as mix-and match with your eyes closes. Studio Calico does a great job of keeping colours and themes together, but stretches you to be creative in how you pull it all together. There are some really amazing designers on the team, who create fabulous projects. The gallery is also full of fabulous layouts from talented members. The forum is full of upbeat, positive and encouraging women. You can be sure there's always fun conversation going on at any given moment of the day. Here's a peek at what will be making it way to my door next week...

If you're wondering about Day 3 of Handmade Holidays, it's coming. The project is a biggie. I probably spent longer in Michael's choosing my supplies, than I'll likely spend putting it together. I've decided not to tell you what it is just yet. Gonna keep you hangn' for a bit.

Handmde Holidays Day 2

Papers are from the Crate Farmhouse line

I actually struggled with this one a bit. It's a lot of pictures on one page. Normally I would have spread this many photos onto two pages, and had room for journaling. I just couldn't seem to make the page work with photos and journaling, so I opted to go for a couple less photos smaller pieces of paper, and nix the story all together, seeing as the photos are pretty self explanatory.

I have a feeling Day 3 is going to be a little tougher. Looking forward to it though, and I'll be sure to share.
